MasterCard, Visa warn of cardholder data breach

NEW YORK (AP) ? MasterCard and Visa said Friday that they had notified issuers of its credit cards of a potential breach of the security of customer accounts. The companies did not say how many customers were affected.

Global Payments Inc., which processes credit card transactions for stores, said it had detected a breach of card data in early March. Breaches of card data can lead to identity theft and unauthorized charges.

Global Payments said it had alerted federal law enforcement and was investigating. Spokeswoman Amy Corn would not say whether cards besides Visa and MasterCard were affected.

Global Payments stock was halted after published reports said it was responsible. The stock fell 9 percent for the day before trading was stopped.

Credit card companies generally protect customers against fraudulent transactions, and Visa said specifically Friday that its U.S. customers were not at risk. Both Visa and MasterCard said their own systems had not been compromised.

Last June, hackers stole information for 360,000 credit card accounts at Citigroup. In the past year, there have been high-profile data attacks against the International Monetary Fund, National Public Radio, Google and Sony's PlayStation Network.

There is an on-going cost of sustaining the open education movement.

While not qualified to provide an opinion as an expert, I can share a student's point of view on the matter which should prove quite valuable because after all, open education resources were mainly made for student consumption.

The Benefits of Open Education Resources for Students
Open education resources offer a number of advantages for students and indeed informal learners who may choose to use them.

They provide access to high quality learning materials to assist with their studies. This may be because the student is finding them openly on the internet, or because tutors, teachers and lecturers are themselves recommending resources. Alternatively, a resource might just be used by a casual learner who is curious about a subject and just wants to understand more.

Open educational resources are made available on the internet and provide an accessible learning solution for anyone with an internet connection, whether they are using a computer or mobile device.

Many institutions post open educational resources that form entire courses, for example video recordings of lectures, accompanying lecture notes and quizzes to test subject understanding. This is making access to learning much easier to afford for those on a very limited budget, such as myself. If developed further, the whole concept of open education could lead to a more intelligent and well educated society, which in turn will benefit everyone.

Former Mr. Universe Manohar Aich turned 100 this weekend, and the 4'11" body builder says the secret to a long life is not taking things too seriously. TODAY's Natalie Morales reports.

Manohar Aich, the 1952 Mr. Universe, is tiny, toothless and proudly ripped. And as of Sunday, he is 100 years old, the Indian Express reported. ?

Aich said the key to longevity, for him, has been a simple diet of milk, fruits and vegetables, along with rice, lentils and fish, the Associated Press reported. He refuses alcohol and tobacco.

He told the Indian Express that times have changed since his weightlifting heyday.

?These youngsters want the easy way out these days,? Aich said. ?They don?t have the time and energy to go through the drills in an old-style gymnasium. They don?t worship their body.?

Aich vied for the Mr. Universe title in 1951 but lost. At the time, he had to travel the city, raising money to compete. The next year, at 4-feet-11-inches, he snagged the title.

As a physical education instructor in Indian Air Force, Aich was jailed for slapping a British officer for making an offensive remark, the Indian Express reported.

"In jail I used to practice on my own, without any equipment, sometimes for 12 hours in a day," he told the AP.

"I like the incredible stunts he does in the movies," Aich said.

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) ? A jury has begun hearing testimony from a man who witnesses say was watched via webcam while kissing a Rutgers University student who committed suicide days later.

The student's roommate, Dharun Ravi (dah-ROON' RAH'-vee), is being tried in New Jersey on privacy invasion charges and isn't accused in the death of Tyler Clementi in September 2010.

Ravi is accused of secretly watching Clementi's liaison with the man identified only as M.B. The man was Clementi's guest at least twice.

Prosecutors say Ravi used a webcam to see what they were doing once ? and tried to do it again on a second visit. Witnesses so far have said that they saw two men kissing but nothing more graphic.
