SEATTLE (AP) ? A Seattle man says that having Billy Idol play his 26th birthday party made for the greatest night of his life.

Michael Henrichsen spent two years persuading the British rock icon to play his party, and it paid off Friday at the packed Showbox SoDo club.

Idol guitarist Steve Stevens played him 'Happy Birthday' in the middle of a solo. Then Idol called Henrichsen onto the stage for a rendition of the song.

Henrichsen's '80s cover band opened for the show.

Idol says Henrichsen's effort stood out from other fan requests because his campaign involved four "Billy Idol Aid" charity concerts that raised $13,000 for the Northwest Harvest food bank and the American Red Cross.

Idol says playing Henrichsen's party in Seattle might help fans see another side of him.

Fire guts east Henrico home, displaces family | Richmond Times ...

By: From staff reports | Times-Dispatch

Fire gutted a home in eastern Henrico County today, displacing the family that lived there, according to a county fire spokesman.

A person passing by the house in the 1900 block of Watts Lane reported fire coming from a window at 7:23 p.m., Henrico Fire Capt. James Mellon said.

County firefighters arrived in four minutes, he said, and discovered heavy fire showing from the house's driveway side and rear.

With the fire moving into the attic, the firefighters asked for additional help with the blaze.

"Neighbors were unsure if anyone was home at the time of the fire," Mellon said, "so crews made entry and completed a rapid search."

No one was home at the time of the fire, however, he said. With six fire trucks and two dozen firefighters engaged, the fire was under control at 7:50 pm.

The family -- a parent and two children -- were displaced from their home because of the significant fire, smoke and heat damage to the structure, Mellon said.

The occupants have made arrangements to stay with family, he said.

No injuries were reported in the incident, Mellon said.

Fire investigators are on scene tonight to determine how the fire started.

Work Your Way To A Better Life With These Self Improvement Tips

TIP! Exercise should be a part of everyone?s routine. The physical reasons for exercising are numerous.

Personal development is really doing things that will improve your awareness and your identity. It deals with improving self-awareness and knowledge, spiritual development and fulfilling personal goals. You are sure to find lots of great ways to work on growing through self improvement in the following article. If you are methodical, you will gain an understanding of your self-knowledge and awareness.

Faith is important to your plans for self improvement, and love is what keeps your faith alive. Without love, it?s impossible to have faith. Make it a priority to activate faith in your life. Serve others when they need help, and commit yourself to doing things that demonstrate your love.

TIP! Though it is important to speak your mind, it is equally valuable to listen when others do so. This is true when bettering yourself.

Spend time with people who look at life the same way you do. They?ll help you stay on track by being good role models for positive behavior, and you?ll better balance any negative energy you get from people who aren?t as supportive of your self-improvement goals.

TIP! By being a leader, you can help improve your personal development. There are many different facets of leadership, but the one people talk about most is the ability to win friends and influence people.

Remember to practice humility. In the big picture, we are simply bits of dust floating in the universe. It is impossible to know everything. We can all learn and grow. Being open to new experiences provides opportunities to learn. Having an open mind to new situations will show you how much more there is to know.

TIP! Always try do do the best you can at whatever you do. You should always try to be the best you can be.

Try to find a book or article that encourages or uplifts you. Some people see it spiritually, whereas others just find it inspirationally. As long as you have a tangible source that can help to inspire you when you?re feeling down, you?ll always be able to regain your peace of mind. This, of course, can vastly increase your ability to deal with anything that life throws your way.

TIP! Focus on your strengths rather than trying to do things that you aren?t capable of or aren?t good at. Everyone is skilled in different areas, which makes the world such a diverse and fascinating place to live.

One way to improve yourself is to discover and emphasize your strengths, while minimizing your weaknesses. Determine what is important to you. Value your personal best and make that important to your life.

TIP! If you find that you are constantly having difficulty meeting your goals, take a step back to evaluate what?s going on. Check online and find others whom share similar goals with you and find out what they are doing compared to what you?re doing.

Self-discipline is a key element of any personal development program. You should have the proper amount of self-control over your desires. You should strive to overcome things such as lust, greed, overeating and drunkenness. When you take control of these desires you life will be a richer and healthier one.

TIP! Overreacting in any situation will cause your anxiety levels to raise. Find ways to deal with high stress situations rationally.

Understand what you want from your life. Following through is the next step. Pondering an ideal life without taking the action to make it a reality will inevitably lead to nothing. You need to step up and pursue your goals to make them really happen.

TIP! Everyone needs a sweet, salty or starchy treat sometimes. Stress can harm your body, and life is too short to worry about every little thing.

Any type of personal development requires that you judge your progress. The tips in this article should help you figure out what your personal goals are and how to achieve them. Gradually begin making changes that can help you reach your personal development goals.

Former Senator McGovern mourned as man of decency, integrity

SIOUX FALLS, South Dakota (Reuters) - Former Democratic Senator George McGovern was a friend, a mentor, a role model and a soft-spoken family man, mourners said on Thursday as they celebrated the passionate opponent of the Vietnam war who was defeated in the 1972 presidential race.

McGovern, who was born and raised in South Dakota, died in Sioux Falls on Sunday at a hospice center at age 90.

"George McGovern was a good and decent man," Vice President Joe Biden said at a prayer service in Sioux Falls for McGovern, whom he credited for giving him the courage to run for the Senate.

Biden said McGovern's call to end the war in Vietnam helped shape his political sensibilities more than anyone before or since. "I honest to God believed that I could maybe go help him end this war," Biden said. "I honest to God believed that."

McGovern suffered one of the most lopsided defeats in U.S. history in the 1972 election, winning only Massachusetts and the District of Columbia, against a well-oiled Republican political machine headed by Richard Nixon.

Later, as Nixon's presidency unraveled in the Watergate scandal, bumper stickers saying, "Don't blame me, I'm from Massachusetts," and buttons saying "Don't blame me, I voted for McGovern," appeared.

"What people don't realize, had your father not been there, had your father never been in the Senate, so much more blood and so much more treasure would have been wasted," Biden told McGovern's children.

Robert Duffett, president of Dakota Wesleyan University, said the university, the city of Mitchell and the state of South Dakota "lost a dear friend" who had an impact worldwide.

"George McGovern spoke truth to power," said Morris Dees, founder of the Southern Poverty Law Center and the national finance director on McGovern's 1972 presidential campaign.

McGovern was a mentor to many Democrats. His 1972 campaign workers included former President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

"When I think of George, I think of a man of uncompromising integrity who dedicated his life to serving our state and our country," said U.S. Senator Tim Johnson of South Dakota.

Before the prayer service a steady stream of mourners viewed McGovern in a flag-draped dark wood casket that was flanked by photographs of the senator and flowers.

The soft-spoken son of a Methodist minister, McGovern was a fierce advocate in the fight against world hunger who continued to give speeches and write until shortly before his death. He served in the Senate for South Dakota from 1963 to 1981.

The senator had "an uncommon sort of patriotism that was expressed with great integrity and eloquence and the courage of his convictions," Thomas Knock, a professor at Southern Methodist University who is writing a biography of McGovern, said in a telephone interview.

McGovern's legacy stretches well beyond his terms in Congress and presidential bids, to include the fight against world hunger, AIDS and other social issues.

McGovern's funeral was set for 1 p.m. on Friday at the Mary Sommervold Hall in the Washington Pavilion of Arts and Science in Sioux Falls.

According to a note on?the official Tumblr Twitter account?? yes, Tumblr is indeed?on Twitter?? there were "slow loading or intermittent errors on certain pages." The service's staff quickly got to work on setting everything right, according to the same tweet, of course.

Despite the assertion that only some pages were?showing errors or loading slowly, we've found that every single Tumblr blog we've tried to access was affected. Based on the panic which flooded?Twitter, many others were experiencing equally severe issues.

A Tumblr spokesperson offered us the following statement when asked about what's went?on with the service:

Tumblr is experiencing network problems following an issue with one of?our uplink providers. Recovery is moving quickly and we will return to?full service shortly.

How to cook the perfect steak | Life and style | The Guardian

A good steak is, I think, one of the purest carnivorous pleasures available. A hearty roast dinner has its charms, of course, as does a slow-cooked, gelatinous stew, but neither is so absolutely, almost primitively meaty as a simple steak ? which is one of the reasons it pops up so often, in my experience, in people's fantasy final meals.

The other, I suspect, is that steak is expensive, and has the reputation of being tricky to do well at home, which means it remains a rare treat for many of us. (Rare, of course, being the only sensible way to eat steak.) But it's even pricier when you're paying someone else to cook it, and someone else to serve it, and yet more people to wash up after it ? surely it must be possible to cook a decent steak at home without an ?18,000 Josper grill?

In fact, I decided to rule out any kind of chargrilling, because in our climate for much of the year it's just not practical to suggest getting the barbecue out; this is to be a strictly kitchen-only affair. And while obviously opinion will differ as to the "perfect" cut, I've decided to go for rib-eye, on the basis that it seems to be the one favoured in the vast majority of steak recipes, from London's Hawksmoor to New York's April Bloomfield. And if it's good enough for the chefs ...

Preparation

Wall Street Journal recipe steak Wall Street Journal recipe steak. Photograph: Felicity Cloake

Food science boffin (as the popular press would term him) and general genius Harold McGee reckons there are two secrets to successful steak cookery: "warm meat and frequent flips". The second I'll come to in a moment, but apparently the best way to ensure the first is to wrap the steaks in cling film then immerse them in warm water for 30?60 minutes before cooking.

A recipe from the Wall Street Journal based on tips from some of New York City's finest steakhouses recommends allowing them come to room temperature before cooking, as does Michelin-mega-chef Alain Ducasse and Hawksmoor at Home, the recipe book from the widely-worshipped London steakhouse group. I can see McGee's solution is a good one if you only get home an hour before you want to cook your steaks or if you're bound by draconian food hygiene regulations, but otherwise, allowing them to sit for two hours seems to reap exactly the same results.

Drying

Hawksmoor recipe steak Hawksmoor recipe steak. Photograph: Felicity Cloake

The Wall Street Journal, Hawksmoor and Cook's Illustrated's New Best Recipe Book all recommend patting the surface of the steak dry before cooking it, which makes sense to me after my experience hair-dryering a joint of pork in the search for perfect crackling.

Hawskmoor explains that wet steak will "struggle to form a decent crust and can pick up some unpleasant boiled-meat flavours". It does seem to help a little with the initial browning process, although once the steaks have been at room temperature for a couple of hours they're already slightly drier than they would be straight from the fridge in any case.

Seasoning

Hawksmoor recipe steak Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall recipe steak. Photograph: Felicity Cloake

In his book Kitchen Mysteries, French chemist Herv? This recommends not salting the meat "because the phenomenon of osmosis causes the juices to escape the meat when muscular fibres are cut and open" ? but Cook's Illustrated, Ducasse, the Wall Street Journal, Hawksmoor, the Leiths Meat Bible and April Bloomfield of New York's The Spotted Pig, all disagree.

Indeed, in her book A Girl and her Pig, April suggests "generously" seasoning the steaks all over with salt and letting them stand for 10 minutes ? "this will help the steaks cook evenly". Nigel Slater and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall both salt halfway through cooking. The Hawksmoor boys, meanwhile breezily dismiss the notion, urging the reader to season the meat "well. More than you probably think sensible. It will help build up a delicious salty crust. Some say you shouldn't season the steak until after you've cooked it. We think they're wrong."

After cooking my way through seven steaks in quick succession, I have to agree with them: salt definitely seems to help build up a crisp, savoury layer on the outside of the meat, and doesn't seem to have resulted in any significant loss of juices, possibly because of the brief cooking time involved.

Fat

Alain Ducasse recipe steak Alain Ducasse recipe steak. Photograph: Felicity Cloake

Herv? This suggests you can "improve the contact and transfer of heat" by brushing the meat with oil or clarified butter before cooking ? an idea also favoured by Slater in Appetite (though "not too much, just enough to give it a good gloss"). The Wall Street Journal, Fearnley-Whittingstall and the Ginger Pig Meat Book prefer to grease the pan instead: the WSJ with flavourless canola oil, Fearnley-Whittingstall suggesting butter, dripping or lard, and the Ginger Pig going, like Slater, for olive oil.

I use dripping, but conclude that any fat is unnecessary, if not downright bad news ? although Fearnley-Whittingstall's steak sizzles as it hits the pan, it then seems to bubble away for the first 30 seconds rather than browning. There should be enough fat on a good rib-eye to keep it from sticking in any case. Bloomfield drizzles her steak with olive oil and lemon juice as it rests instead, which seems to me an infinitely better idea if you really like the flavour, though again, not strictly necessary.

Cook's Illustrated recipe steak Cook's Illustrated recipe steak. Photograph: Felicity Cloake

Ducasse uses butter ? but instead of adding it to the empty pan, or brushing it on the steak, he waits until the steak is browned on all sides before introducing it. The rapidly melting butter, flavoured with crushed garlic, is then used to baste the steak as it finishes cooking. This gives it a gorgeous richness ? even the Hawksmoor book, which doesn't bother with any cooking fat in the restaurant recipe, admits that steak in butter is one of the authors' "favourite, most indulgent ways of cooking them at home". Importantly, the browning of the butter helps to impart some lovely savoury flavour to the crust along with the garlic; it's not in the pan long enough to burn. Steak is an occasional indulgence for most of us, so you may as well enjoy it to the full.

Temperature

Nigel Slater recipe steak Nigel Slater recipe steak. Photograph: Felicity Cloake

The recipes are split broadly between those who cook the steak on a very high heat (Slater, Hawksmoor and Herv? This), and those who suggest a more moderate heat (the Ginger Pig, Fearnley-Whittingstall, the WSJ and Bloomfield). Cook's Illustrated superheats the pan, then turns the heat down after adding the steak. The argument seems to be whether charred flavours are desirable, as Hawksmoor believe, or, in Hugh's words, "a distraction from the sheer joy of eating the very best steak". Personally, I like a little bit of charring, so in general, I'd recommend getting the pan as hot as you dare before adding the steak: you shouldn't be able to hold your hand above it for more than a second before you begin to scorch.

However, Ducasse's ideas change everything again. His method depends on a really thick steak; but then, many of the recipes I try specify the steaks should be cut at least 4cm thick (Ducasse, Fearnley-Whittingstall, Cook's Illustrated, WSJ, Hawksmoor), with April Bloomfield going up to 6cm. Nigel suggests choosing one as thick as one's thumb ? I suspect his may be larger than mine, because I'm not going to bother with a steak 1.5cm thick: as Hawksmoor observes, getting the requisite contrast between charred outside and juicy interior is "very difficult with a thin piece of meat". Because the steak is so chunky, it can stand a more moderate heat for longer without overcooking, during which time "you get good caramelisation". The steaks may not be quite as black as, say, Slater's, but they do boast a very healthy crust.

Flippin' steak

April Bloomfield recipe steak April Bloomfield recipe steak. Photograph: Felicity Cloake

Back to our old friend McGee, who claims that frequent flipping is the key to moist steak ? "frequent turns mean that neither side has the time either to absorb or to release large amounts of heat. The meat cooks faster, and its outer layers end up less overdone." If you're only cooking it for a couple of minutes on each side, like Slater, I'm not sure the extra juiciness is worth the sacrifice of a crust, but it makes sense with longer cooking methods, like April Bloomfield or Ducasse. It also allows you to keep a careful eye on how the cooking is coming along: steak is too precious a commodity to risk incinerating.

Nigel is also the only chef to take any notice of McGee's eminently simple suggestion of pressing down on the steak as it cooks, "to improve thermal contact". I don't find his steak at all dry, and the crust is the best of any save the Ducasse masterpiece. For quick, weeknight cooking, you can't go far wrong with his recipe (although I'd pre-salt the steak, rather than oiling it) ? but for a steak that really qualifies as perfect, read on ...

Perfect steak

For each steak

Felicity's perfect steak Felicity's perfect steak. Photograph: Felicity Cloake

1 rib-eye steak, at least 4cm thick
Coarse sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
25g butter
1 garlic clove, skin-on and crushed
1 sprig of thyme

1. Take the steaks out of the fridge 2 hours before you're planning to cook, and allow them to come to room temperature.

2. Heat a heavy-based griddle pan or frying pan over a medium-high heat. Pat the steak dry with kitchen towel and then use tongs to press the fatty edge on to the hot pan until nicely browned. Meanwhile spread a thin layer of salt and a sprinkle of coarse pepper on a plate. Put the steak on the plate, and turn to coat the steak lightly, then put it flat-side down into the pan. Cook for 90 seconds on each side, pressing down with a spatula, until both sides are well browned.

3. Add the butter, garlic and thyme to the pan and, when melted, use them to baste the steak, turning it every minute until it's done to your liking: a 4cm steak should take about 6 minutes for medium-rare, but always do it by eye.

4. Take out of the pan and leave somewhere warm to rest for 5?10 minutes, then serve.

Would steak be part of your final meal, or is it overrated? What are your must-have accompaniments (painfully hot crispy frites, steamed spinach and English mustard for me, please), and given our proudly beefy heritage, why are American steakhouses so much better than most British ones?

Ray White Director Dan White shares his views on how technology has influenced the way agents operate.

With his father Brian White, a third-generation leader of the Ray White Group, there was always a very good chance that Dan White would find his way into the family business.

Dan joined the Ray White Group in 2000 after three years at Macquarie Bank?s Property Investment Management Division as the Deputy General Manager of Macquarie Industrial Trust.

In 2001 he and his father established White Private, an investment and advisory branch of the group.

In addition to his role at White Private, Dan is a Director of the Ray White Group and is responsible for the growth of its non-residential businesses.

With years of professional experience and memories from childhood of how he saw agents working, Dan reflects on three of the most important changes technology has made to the real estate industry.

Communication

Building and maintaining relationships with clients is essential to every agent?s working life, but how this is done has changed dramatically in the past few decades.

?Technology has played a huge role in improving the communication between agents, vendors and purchasers,? Dan said.

?I can remember as a kid, going around with my father on a Saturday and all the agents used CB radios in their car. It was always buzzing with chatter to and from the office.

?It was a pretty crude way to communicate, but revolutionary at the time. Now, with mobile phones, SMS and video, communication is so much easier for agents out in the field.

?Communication technology has improved so much; just in my lifetime there has been a major shift in how agents work because they can communicate much more effectively with clients.?

More informed market

With the development of technology, an increased volume of information about the market is now available. Dan said this has required agents to rethink the role they play in the process of education clients about the market.

?The development of online portals and investment websites enables buyers to be more educated about the whole process,? he said.

?We are not the gatekeepers of information that we once were for buyers. I think it has created a more efficient industry, because buyers do a lot of the work themselves.

?It makes for a more professional market as well, because agents need to be more skilled in the process rather than just working on the emotions of clients. This is particularly important in sales where being talented can get you so far, but you still need the analytical skills to help the buyers.?

Mobile agents

Having great local knowledge and being known in the community have always been key to getting an advantage as an agent. Though it has always been important to be out in the field, it has never been easier for agents than it is now.

Dan said using cloud technology to integrate networks and giving agents more capacity when out in the field has been a key change in recent years.

?The industry has embraced technology to get agents out in the field yet still able to communicate with clients and other staff members, and we can provide information to agents through the cloud as they need it,? he said.

?It has given real value to the concept of being in a real estate network, collaborating and accessing standard documents without perpetually heading back to the office for paperwork.

?Cloud technology allows agents to report, contact, research, recall and reference information and documents from the vendor?s property, from their car or from the other side of the world.?

The 62nd Annual Lindau Meeting: "Beyond the Classroom" [Video]

Nature Video presents five short films on this summer's Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting, which brought early-career physicists together with Nobel Prize-winners

Image: Nature Video

The majority of Nobel prizewinners are men, including the two in this film: Harry Kroto and Dudley Herschbach. This gender imbalance worries the young researchers who join them at a German school to debate the state of science education and how science is perceived beyond the classroom. Kroto tells them about a creationist museum in the U.S., which brings up the issue of public trust in science. The young researchers wonder what role they can play.

UM Canes coach Golden today: RB Duke Johnson practices, QB ...

Hurricanes coach Al Golden spoke to us on the ACC Coaches' Teleconference Wednesday afternoon and offered up some positive news:

* Running back Duke Johnson, Golden said, "practiced today. The X-Rays were negative. Was he 100 percent? No. But he was certainly over 90, enough to practice.''

?? Keep in mind that Johnson had a foot examined during the FSU game, and that Golden reminded reporters on Sunday that it was a separate injury from his turf toe. "I'm not sure if it's an ankle or a foot,'' Golden said Sunday. Today, Golden did not talk specifically about the turf toe, just that Duke seems to be much better regarding the most recent injury.

?? Reporters have no access to practice through at least Friday (another day off on Friday), so we're not sure if Johnson wore a yellow jersey (limited) or was full-go.Today was UM's first day of practice since its loss to FSU.

* The update on Stephen Morris' sprained left ankle is also positive.

?? Golden was asked if Morris is "still in a boot and still sore.'' His response: "No, he's doing better. Sunday, Monday and Tuesday helped him a lot. It's not like we're asking him to run the ball a lot or scramble today. It's mostly pocket stuff or handing the ball off or play-action. He did fine. I just think the combination of those three days and another day off Friday and a fairly light practice on Saturday should get us to where we want to be for game week.''

An interesting factoid in advance of the UM-Virginia Tech Thursday-night ESPN game Nov. 1:

The Hurricanes, according to ACC associate commissioner for football communications Mike Finn, have posted a 15-3 record -- .833 winning percentage -- in ESPN Thursday-night games, the best of any ACC school with five or more appearances.

Explosive Detecting Devices Face Off With Bomb Dogs

First time accepted submitter titan1070 writes "French scientist Dr. Spitzer and his colleagues have been working on a device that can sense faint traces of TNT and other explosives being smuggled into airports and other transportation methods. the hope for this device is that it will surpass the best bomb finder in the business, the sniffer dog. From the article: ' While researchers like Dr. Spitzer are making progress ? and there are some vapor detectors on the market ? when it comes to sensitivity and selectivity, dogs still reign supreme. ?Dogs are awesome,? said Aimee Rose, a product sales director at the sensor manufacturer Flir Systems, which markets a line of explosives detectors called Fido. ?They have by far the most developed ability to detect concealed threats,? she said. But dogs get distracted, cannot work around the clock and require expensive training and handling, Dr. Rose said, so there is a need for instruments.'"

Innovation: Begin by Thinking Different | Business 2 Community

Innovation and Change, a Historical Perspective

A historical perspective of an organization, as those cited by Willem Mastenbroek from over a decade ago are not only interesting as an evolutionary history of organization and the firm, but also facilitate insight into early management and human behavior.? The examples also give a glimpse into what has necessitated change throughout history, motivated change and what facilitated change.? In other words, what does history tell us about how organizations were able to adapt, and overcome in terms of their need for change and innovation?? Using a military example, Mastenbroek describes how problems among troops were addressed using ?a combination of procedural enhancement, and moral enhancing modifications.? Mastenbroek describes an enlargement of these improvements with ?delegation and autonomy enhancing instructions where this thinking translated into team spirit and even decreased casualties.? One wonders if World War II was won in part (in spite of the high U.S. casualties), because we literally threw so many more humans at the conflict than the other side ? not the best strategy to be sure.? Mastenbroek makes the point that development within trade commerce was not unlike that of the developmental changes he described in the military history sections.? Namely, ?the skills of self-organization, [and as it turns out], ideas of autonomy and self-organization are not new? (Mastenbroek).

Innovation and Change ? Is Aging an Asset or Liability?

In another older article, Sorensen and Stuart suggest ?aging on organizational competencies depends on the relative magnitude of the gains from experience with a set of routines and the losses due to various forms of organizational sclerosis? (2000).? They form four hypotheses related to the effects on aging both of an organization itself, and the employee population that makes up that organization.? ?Many scholars have argued that large size is associated with high levels of complexity and bureaucracy (Blau and Schoenherr, 1971) and a decline in organizational responsiveness that leads to reduced levels of innovation? (Sorensen and Stuart, 2000) ? does this not speak to our present time?? Some truths simply transcend their contemporary context.

As an organization grows and matures, as I have said elsewhere, it tends to take on the persona of a government.? The authors find the same to be true in terms of job preservation,

?to preserve their privileged positions, dominant political coalitions inside the firm often have strong incentives to insure that the firm continues to focus on activities and market niches that require their expertise?as organizations age, they gain history and routines that limit their flexibility by restricting the range of organizational action (Sorensen and Stuart, 2000).

This leads to natural problems of organizational and workforce obsolescence.? The results of Sorensen and Stuart?s testing shows what might appear to be contradictory results; on the one hand, ?as firms grow older, their outputs become increasingly dated?large firms are less well-cited on a per-patent basis, but the innovations of large semiconductor firms are more likely to be cited by the patents of other organizations (2000).? In other words, the capital a large firm can throw behind an idea or innovation can clearly produce results, disproportionate rates notwithstanding. Sorensen and Stuart summarize as follows:

On the one hand, experience with a set of organizational routines leads to gains in the efficiency with which these routines are executed. On the other hand, in rapidly changing environments, the fit between organizational capabilities and environmental demands declines with age (2000).

The redemption perhaps, is that the lack of employee (and thus expertise) turnover with age can produce ?gains in competence? (Sorensen and Stuart, 2000), ?but high levels of turnover also expose the firm to a greater variety of external influences?which may make it easier for the firm to stay abreast of new technological developments? (Sorensen and Stuart, 2000).? But this also creates a crisis in next generation executive leadership based on the age of our labor population, which we are also experiencing in our present time.? How ironic that there is such a pent up desire for employment, yet difficulty in filling positions waiting for the right succession plan.

Innovation and Change ? An Entrepreneurial Perspective

Whether entrepreneurs are what they are by nature or practiced behavior, they are the risk takers, and consequently, often innovators.? According to McCarthy & Leavy, the ?charismatic type of entrepreneur is strategy driven, visionary and idealistic?underpinned by humanistic as well as commercial values? (1999).? This model takes on the typical caricature, which is often true of both this type of personality as well as this type of businessperson.? Of the pragmatic type, McCarthy & Leavy state that this type is ?calculated, down-to-earth, planned and rational (1999).? Oddly enough, either type could fail, succeed wildly, or continue somewhere in the middle.? And just as aversion to risk is different among individuals, so too among those who enterprise for themselves ?have varying degrees of risk tolerance? (McCarthy & Leavy, 1999).? Partnerships can be very helpful in entrepreneurship, as the Achilles Heel of self-employment, is the ability to make decisions in a vacuum, with no collaboration, alternative opinions, or critical assessment of ideas.? In either type, you have the leaders, whose vision makes ideas and innovation possible, and who characteristics are often what are needed in large organizational leadership.

Innovation and Change ? Here and Now

Apple computer had a simple ad slogan and a great saying for life; ?think different? (?Thinks Different,? 1997).? Innovation begins with thinking differently.? According to Jeffrey Baumgartner, ?innovation is the application of the creative ideas in order to generate value? (2009).? This may be simply using ideas that are new in their present application, or it may be something altogether original flowing out from creative genius.? Baumgartner says of creativity, ?The secret to creative thinking is to start with good problems. Then you need to turn those problems into thought provoking challenges. After that, great ideas will almost invent themselves? (Baumgartner (b), 2007).? I created the following illustration using the concepts from? The Secret to Creativity:

In this adaptation of Baumgartner?s ideas, an organizational (or any) problem can be analyzed through the process of brainstorming and creative thinking, with the challenges and action plan flowing from this exercise.? Applying this concept to various organizations large and small, as Baumgartner points out, ?we often come up with bad (or the wrong) solutions because they have not thought through the problem? (2007).? As history shows us, though variables change due to technology and advancement of the day, innovation has and always will begin with?thinking differently.

Manatee's toughest jobs: Behind the scenes with the bedbug exterminator

Imagine that it's as hot as a sauna in your house.

Around 140 degrees -- hot enough to melt candles and cosmetics, like the inside of a car with the windows rolled up on a sunny day.

Now imagine rearranging all the furniture in your house in that heat. For good measure, reorganize everything inside your closets and cabinets, too. Once you're finished, do it all over again.

Sound crazy? That's what the bedbug crew at Keller's Pest Control in Bradenton do nearly every day. But they're not redecorating, they're eradicating. Bedbugs.

They're a largely unseen menace, lurking in the dark crevices of places where

people normally feel the safest. Once the blinds are drawn, the lights switched off, and we're snug in our sheets or easy chairs, basking in the glow of the television, the bedbug's blood feast begins.

They can be no thicker than a credit card and as small as the tip of a blunt pencil. For those who have been unlucky enough to harbor them -- unwittingly inviting them into their home, carried on clothing, bedding, luggage or furniture -- it can become nothing short of a nightmare.

Rodney O'Quinn, owner of Keller's Pest Control, has seen it first hand. People often call in and break down on the telephone, crying as they describe how they can't sleep at night, or tell of children covered in welts -- allergic reactions caused by the tiny blood-eating insect's bites.

O'Quinn's company has treated a diverse array of local homes and edifices, from hotels and condos to offices and nursing homes. They can be found pretty much anywhere people congregate, and getting rid of them can be expensive and exhausting.

About four years ago, after trying conventional treatments for years with varying degrees of success, O'Quinn invested in a thermal-eradication solution. So far it has been a win-win scenario for both O'Quinn and his customers.

As bed bug infestations continue to rise across thecountry, so does the volume of calls Keller gets from people throughout the Tampa Bay area, including right here in Manatee County.

Keller's Pest Control is unique in that they are the only company within four neighboring counties to provide this method of bedbug eradication. Their work takes them from Charlotte County up to Tampa and east to Orlando.

As O'Quinn explains, all life phases of the insect will perish when exposed to high temperatures for certain lengths of time. But once the temperature hits 126 degrees, it's more or less instant death for a crawling bedbug.

Crank up the temperature to about 140 degrees and heat every surface of every object or structural element inside a living space for at least a few hours and it's a guaranteed no-win scenario for the bugs and their offspring and eggs.

It is meticulous work carried out under adverse conditions. They have to be sure to distribute the heat thoroughly and consistently. That means moving everything -- couches, mattresses, bureaus, china cabinets, closets stuffed with clothing, sheets and bric-a-brac -- all getting shifted and rotated around in those scorching temperatures to ensure heat penetration and bug death. To keep safe from overheating and overexertion, the bedbug crew always works together and try to limit their exposure to the heat for 10 minutes at a time.

Equipment setup takes about an hour and a half, unless there's stairs. For each service call, The Keller's Pest Control crew will route hundreds of pounds worth of pressure-resistant hoses and connect them to portable radiators strategically placed throughout the home or building. The hoses circulate heated fluid pumped from a trailer-mounted furnace.

The radiators crank out heat at temperatures exceeding 140 degrees and work in conjunction with a dozen industrial fans positioned to help create a convection current throughout the rooms being treated.

Remote temperature sensors are placed inside each room and in critical spots, such as bed frames or underneath furniture, and are monitored and recorded by a computer that allows the workers to visualize any problem cold spots and redirect the flow of heat. In one visit they can treat up to 3,000 square feet.

In situations where adjoining apartments or condos may be the source of a bedbug infestation, additional prevention and treatment steps are taken to eradicate the pests, including the use of bedbug sniffing dogs trained to detect the insect's tell-tale sweet and musty odor, which is oftentimes compared to rotting raspberries.

As O'Quinn and his crew work their bedbug mojo, they consume liters of water and sweat through every layer of clothing. Then, hours after they begin, they have to reverse the process -- unhooking and removing all the heavy equipment after allowing it to cool to below scorching temperatures.

Once that's finished, everything inside the home back goes back to its proper place. No easy task itself, as all the contents of the home are splayed about in various configurations. For a mind addled by extreme heat and exertion, it seems like a wicked game of memory: On top of it all, one has to remember where everything goes.

So next time you remark on how hot Florida can get, just think of these guys. Every time they walk outside from their lovingly crafted, honest-to-goodness bedbug killing inferno to take a break, for them, the sultry 90-degree weather feels quite refreshing.

But despite the grueling details of the job, for O'Quinn and his employees, there is satisfaction to be found in a job well done. Bedbugs can wreak havoc on both a physical and psychological level, and getting rid of them goes a long way in helping to return someone's life to normal -- where normal means being able to have a good night's sleep without being tormented by the hunger-driven visitations of the lowly blood-sucking bedbug.

It doesn't hurt that it pays well, either.

Gov't to allow Indians to possess eagle feathers

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Justice Department said Friday it is going to allow members of federally recognized Indian tribes to possess eagle feathers, although that's a federal crime.

This is a significant religious and cultural issue for many tribes, who were consulted in advance about the policy the department announced.

The Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act and other federal wildlife laws criminalize the killing of eagles, which are listed as either endangered or threatened, and possession of feathers and bird parts, but the Constitution and federal laws also give tribes local sovereignty for self-government.

Under the new Justice Department policy, tribal members will not be prosecuted for wearing or carrying federally protected birds, bird feathers or parts. They also may pick up feathers found in the wild as long as they do not disturb federally protected birds or nests. Giving, lending or trading feathers or bird parts among tribe members, without any other compensation, also will be allowed.

While Justice did not previously have a written policy, the new directive is in line with long-standing practice by Justice prosecutors, U.S. attorneys and the Interior Department not to prosecute in such circumstances.

But the Justice Department will continue to prosecute tribe members and nonmembers alike for violating federal laws that prohibit killing eagles and other migratory birds or the buying or selling the feathers or other bird parts.

In addition, members of federally recognized tribes are covered by the new Justice Department policy regardless of whether they have a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service permit, Attorney General Eric Holder said in a memo to U.S. attorney offices around the country.

Holder said the new policy was issued to address concerns of tribal members who were unsure of how they might be affected by federal wildlife law enforcement efforts, particularly whether a permit would be required. The Fish and Wildlife Service issues a very limited number of permits for Indians to kill eagles in the wild or obtain feathers and carcasses of accidentally killed eagles from a federal repository.

Doug Craven, the natural resources director for the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians in Michigan, said tribal members there frequently encounter feathers from around 25 bald eagle nesting sites on their reservation. But it wasn't always clear to them whether they could keep the feathers for ceremonial use or if they'd have to send them off to a repository.

"They feel that's been gifted to them and they have a responsibility for that feather," said Craven, who was part of a group consulting with the Justice Department on the eagle feather policy. "This policy supports that."

While tradition and customs vary widely among the more than 500 federally recognized tribes, a high reverence for eagles is fairly consistent.

Holder said the new Justice Department policy strikes the right balance between enforcing wildlife laws that protect eagles and respecting the cultural and religious practices of federally recognized Indian tribes.

"From time immemorial, many native Americans have viewed eagle feathers and other bird parts as sacred elements of their religious and cultural traditions," said Assistant Attorney General Ignacia Moreno, head of the department's environment and natural resources division. She called the new policy "a major step forward by establishing a consistent and transparent policy to guide federal enforcement of the nation's wildlife laws."

Currently, a federal depository near Denver holds the carcasses of eagles that are killed by contact with power lines or other causes. Indians may apply for a feather or a carcass. There is a wait to get the feathers.

The Fish and Wildlife Service has issued a few permits allowing tribes to kill eagles in the wild. The Hopi Tribe has killed golden eagles under a federal permit for years. The Northern Arapaho Tribe of Wyoming received a federal permit from the Fish and Wildlife Service earlier this year that would allow the tribe to take up to two bald eagles a year for use in the tribe's annual Sun Dance.

However, the Northern Arapaho are suing the Fish and Wildlife Service in federal court. The tribe argues the federal permit is meaningless because it would limit the tribe to killing bald eagles outside the Wind River Indian Reservation, but a Wyoming state law prohibits killing eagles outside the reservation.
