With the increasing number of opportunities presented by new social media technology, how can you create a context for your brand message that speaks to your target audiences, making your stories not just interesting, but important. South Africa's Soweto gets its fashion week

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Struggling but deserving designers will get a chance to show work inspired by the creativity and history of South Africa's most famous township in Soweto's first fashion week opening Thursday.

The township on Johannesburg's southwestern edge was the natural place for a show for new designers, said 23-year-old entrepreneur and Soweto Fashion Week organizer Stephen Manzini.

"You walk around Soweto, you see creativity everywhere," Manzini said.

Manzini didn't ask designers to show extensive collections or charge them take part, unlike the country's more established fashion weeks. Fashion blogger Mahlatse James says this gives a chance to designers who have not yet made a name to have a chance to show their work to boutique owners and potential investors.

"Creatives from Soweto do need their own platform," James said. "If the other fashion platforms cannot afford them that, they have to create their own."

Manzini acknowledges Soweto Fashion Week is an ambitious title for his three-day showcase of 16 designers. Rehearsals were held in the parking lot and garden of a modest apartment borrowed from a tailor friend, in a northern Johannesburg neighborhood some designers found difficult to reach by taxi van, the main form of cheap mass transportation in South Africa.

"We refused to be stopped because we don't have funding," said Manzini, who raised 60,000 rand (about $7,500) from churches, business people and other sponsors for the event. His mother, a nurse, tapped her contacts and acted as chairwoman of the event, and is someone off whom he could bounce ideas, Manzini said.

Manzini is confident that in coming years, the event will grow to a full week and give many more designers an opportunity. He hopes to start his own business distributing designs that will first take the catwalk this week.

Soweto has long been known for its quirky sense of style, with designers splashing bright colors and urban sensibilities on everything from the latest silhouettes on European runways to reworkings of the dapper suits Nelson Mandela wore when he lived in the township in the 1940s. The older Mandela is best known for his relaxed but colorful shirts. But as a younger man, the son of a royal family was a political celebrity in Soweto, and dressed the part.

"The style that Nelson Mandela rocked in his day," and other looks from the 1940s and 1950s are popular among Soweto designers, said fashion writer James, who himself sports a shaved part in his hair, like Mandela had as a young man.

James, dressed on the day he was interviewed in a purple tartan bow tie and eye-popping blue shoes, also favors the bright colors and nerdy yet cool skinny silhouettes popularized by the Smarteez, a design collective from Soweto that has drawn international attention.

The designers in Manzini's shows aren't as recognizable as Smarteez. But the strikingly modern Soweto Hotel, one of Manzini's sponsors, has given them a classy stage with an evocative history. The hotel where the shows will be staged sits on the square where, in 1955, South Africans of all races gathered to adopt the Freedom Charter, which proclaims: "South Africa belongs to all who live in it, black and white." Freedom Square is now a national monument.

For 29-year-old designer Tebogo Lehlabi, Soweto is "liberation. It's freedom."

Lehlabi has never before participated in a fashion week. She said she had not been confident enough in the past to seek such a showcase, but now hopes that boutique owners will see her designs in Soweto and seek her out.

"It's a great opportunity. It's a long time coming. There's a lot of talent that's going on in the townships," said Lehlabi, who comes from another Johannesburg township, Alexandra.

"Soweto is coming along, it's coming into its own" along with the rest of South Africa, Lehlabi said. "We're an emerging identity. So, anything goes. It's a young and fresh identity."

She expresses her own identity in recycled materials and bits and pieces she finds at supermarkets and hardware stores. She dyes her clothing to washed out blues and grays that she says suggest Johannesburg's smog and "that bleached look that you sometimes get just before it rains."

Her collection for the Soweto Fashion Show includes sleeveless blouses made from cloth her local supermarkets sells for rags. It's a soft cotton that dyes beautifully, Lehlabi said.

She takes the brightly checked vinyl bags impoverished travelers load onto buses and trains across Africa, and cuts them into pieces to use as decorative trim. Other embellishments are hand-woven from hardware store rope.

"I'm inspired by the working class. Because I am working class," she said.

Each piece is painstakingly handmade.

But "it's very street. It's street couture," Lehlabi said.

Lehlabi turns subtlety and thrift into elegance. Collen Monnakgotla, 32, another designer, represents the other extreme of township ingenuity. He dresses men in bright blocks of color, and his fabrics range from denim to Lycra.

Monnakgotla said he brings "something ghetto, something funky" to Soweto Fashion Week.

John Edwards a 'bad husband,' not a criminal, lawyer argues

John Edwards was a bad husband who cheated on his wife while she died of cancer, but he never broke the law, his lawyer said in closing arguments today.

The prosecution said Edwards was more than a bad husband. The former presidential candidate was the chief architect of a criminal scheme to illegally use campaign contributions to cover up the love affair.

Edwards, 58, is on trial for allegedly using nearly $1 million in donations from wealthy donors Fred Baron and Rachel "Bunny" Mellon to keep secret his affair with mistress Rielle Hunter in order to protect his 2008 presidential ambitions and later his hopes of winning a spot as vice president or attorney general.

The jury is being asked to decide whether the money was political donations used to dupe the government or gifts from friends who helped Edwards fool his wife, Elizabeth, who was dying of cancer. If convicted, Edwards could be sentenced to as much as 30 years in prison.

"This is a case which should define the difference between someone committing a wrong and someone committing a crime," said Edwards' attorney Abbe Lowell.

"John was a bad husband, but there is not the remotest chance that John did or intended to violate the law," Lowell said.

"If what John did was a crime, we'd better build a lot more court rooms, hire a lot more prosecutors and build a lot more jails," he said.

Lowell put much of the blame for soliciting and spending the money on former aide Andrew Young and his wife Cheri Young, a couple that he said "could shame Bonnie and Clyde." The Youngs, he said, used Edwards' scandal to enrich themselves.

"John's conduct was shameful, but it was human? Andrew Young's lies on the stand and the government sponsoring those lies is worse," Lowell said.

"Andrew Young will make up anything he wants? and the government will build its case on it," he said.

John Edwards remained unemotional during closing arguments, much the way he has throughout the trial, keeping his chin pressed against his crossed hands, and only occasionally looking at the jury.

Prosecutor Robert Higdon tried to convince the jury that Edwards was an archly ambitious politician fixated on obtaining a higher office.

"He would deny, deceive and manipulate," Higdon told the jury. "The whole scheme was cooked up to support John Edwards' political ambitions."

The prosecutor recalled the testimony of Andrew Young who was uneasy about the "'truck load of money" that was "way way way over the limit" in donations that is allowed by the Federal Election Commission, but said it was to "help John Edwards maintain his candidacy."

Higdon recalled that Cheri Young testified she insisted she be told by Edwards personally that the complicated plan to funnel Mellon's money through her personal account was legal and that Edwards curtly told her, "Get the money in."

"Ladies and gentlemen, that's what this case is all about," he told the jury.

Edwards so wanted to be a "player on the national scene" that he ignored the campaign finance rules established to give both the rich and the poor an equal say in politics.

"John Edwards forgot his own rhetoric," Higdon said, alluding to Edwards' "two Americas" campaign speeches. "He had no problem dividing the two Americas when it served his own purpose."

Higdon started his closing argument by recalling that December 2006 day when Edwards declared his candidacy.

"He wanted to be our leader. He asked for our vote," Higdon said. In the audience that day was Rielle Hunter, and on "that day, the seeds of his destruction were sown."

After Edwards was photographed with Hunter in Beverley Hills in 2007, he became desperate to hide the affair, prosecutors said, relying on Andrew Young to hide Hunter, even claim to be the father of her daughter.

Young collected $725,000 from Mellon, who gave money without asking questions, knowing only that it was going places other than Edwards' official campaign coffers.

"There was probably no one else on the planet who wanted John Edwards to be president more than Bunny Mellon," Higdon said.

An additional $400,000 came from Fred Baron, Edwards' former campaign treasurer, who provided luxury homes and shopping sprees to Hunter.

Prosecutors said Edwards knew about it all, and when he heard Baron talking about the money he gave Hunter, "John Edwards said nothing. No questions, no comments, no denial, no challenge, no nothing."

Edwards, a famed trial lawyer himself, never took the stand in his own defense. Nor did jurors hear directly from Rielle Hunter.

Edwards' defense lasted just three days and consisted mostly of a forensic accounting of bank statements and phone records. That testimony contrasted sharply with three weeks of prosecution witness who detailed Edwards' sordid affair but never said Edwards had any direct knowledge that he was violating campaign finance laws.

The Most Exciting Moment of My Scientific Career

Thumbi Ndung?u left Kenya 1995 to study medicine at Harvard. He later returned to Africa on a mission to exploit HIV?s vulnerabilities. Now the head of the HIV Pathogenesis Program at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa, Ndung?u spoke with Scientific American contributor Brendan Borrell about a research breakthrough early in his career that helped set the pace for the Kenyan?s ongoing study of genes in the immune system that may help to fight AIDS and lead to a vaccine. When asked which moment has been the most exciting of his young career, Ndung?u responded:

?The most exciting moment for me was when I succeeded in developing the first molecular clone of HIV subtype C as a graduate student at Harvard in the late 1990s. HIV subtype C is the most common subtype in the world. About 50 percent of all infections are caused by subtype C, but developing an infectious clone was difficult for reasons that we don?t fully understand.

?An infectious clone is when you take a virus and put it in a bacterial plasmid [a circular strand of DNA] so that you can grow it over and over again. The example that I like to use is that it?s almost like a cassette recording of the entire genetic information of the virus. Every time you need to use the virus in a well-controlled experiment in the laboratory, you can then get that infectious molecular clone and put it in a cell to make copies of it.

?I?d been trying for three years to make a clone, and was getting very frustrated. There were many other groups around the world that had also been trying and had not been successful. Once we had what we thought was a clone, we ran a series of experiments to make sure we had the full length of the HIV inserted. Then we put it into cells and waited for several days before testing whether we were getting active virus production. We were.

?It?s hard to say what we did that was different from other groups, but I probably just kept trying until something worked. It also took a bit of luck.?

When we review a second-generation product there are certain things we tend to take for granted: this new thing, whatever it is, will be thinner, faster, longer-lasting, maybe even with more bells and whistles in tow. With Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1, though, it's a little less obvious why its sequel is here. It offers near-identical specs, including a 10-inch, 1280 x 800 PLS display, dual-core 1GHz chip, 1GB of RAM and a minimum of 16GB of internal storage. What's more, this generation is slightly thicker and heavier, and sheds the LED flash that used to sit on the back side. But there's one detail we haven't mentioned yet: in addition to softening the specs, Samsung dropped the price by about hundred bucks, so that it now starts at $400.

Clearly, then, the 10.1 has evolved into a mid-range tablet, whereas it used to be the best Samsung had to offer. That's good news for penny-pinching shoppers, but Samsung has a bit of a problem on its hands: it's jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire, dodging direct competition with the new iPad, only to find itself competing with a raft of affordable tablets made by Acer, ASUS and even Apple. So how does Samsung's warmed-over 10.1 compare? Can it be a winner in the mid-tier category, at least? Let's find out.

Purportedly, the two sides have until 5PM tomorrow to strike a deal that'll keep the firm out of bankruptcy court (if you'll recall, it owes over $1.6 billion dollars to various entities), but given just how far apart these sides remain, its fate seems all but sealed. We'll be keeping an ear to the ground for more, but don't go placing bets on yet another debt-term violation waiver.
