ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) ? When Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum calls President Barack Obama "a snob" for wanting all Americans to attend college, he may be out of step with the public's overall view of higher education.
Many Americans are suspicious of the culture of academia, and most are angry about rising costs. But they overwhelmingly ? and increasingly ? agree that higher education is important and aspire to it for themselves and their children.
On the campaign trail, Santorum has criticized what he perceives as the liberal nature of the higher education community. He upped the ante on his arguments leading into Tuesday's primaries in Michigan and Arizona.
"President Obama has said he wants everybody in America to go to college. What a snob," Santorum said Saturday. "There are good, decent men and women who go out and work hard every day, and put their skills to test, who aren't taught by some liberal college professor (who) tries to indoctrinate them. I understand why he wants you to go to college. He wants to remake you in his image. I want to create jobs so people can remake their children into their image, not his."
Santorum mischaracterized Obama's comments. In fact, the president has called for all Americans to obtain some form of education beyond high school, although not necessarily four-year colleges as Santorum has repeatedly implied, and for the United States to regain the global lead in those with college degrees by 2020. Many of Obama's higher-education initiatives, including a proposed $8 billion fund unveiled as part of his budget proposal earlier this month, focus on workforce development at community colleges that award certificates and degrees of less than four years.
The president, addressing governors at the White House on Monday, emphasized that goal again.
"When I speak about higher education we're not just talking about a four-year degree," he said. "We're talking about somebody going to a community college and getting trained for that manufacturing job that now is requiring somebody walking through the door, handling a million-dollar piece of equipment. And they can't go in there unless they've got some basic training beyond what they received in high school."
White House press secretary Jay Carney later said that he didn't believe Obama was specifically reacting to Santorum's "snob" comment. But Carney addressed it directly: "I don't think any parent in American who has a child would think it snobbery to hope for that child the best possible education in the future, and that includes college."
Santorum has three college degrees ? a bachelor's, an MBA and a law degree. Obama has a bachelor's degree and a law degree.
Interviewed Sunday on ABC's "This Week," Santorum recalled a statistic that suggested more than 60 percent of kids who enter college committed to a faith leave without it. He said there are "some real problems at our college campuses with political correctness, with an ideology that is forced upon people who, you know, who may not agree with the politically correct left doctrine."
In December, at a campaign stop in Iowa, Santorum attacked the culture of higher education, telling voters that colleges and universities have become "indoctrination centers for the left." He also took a swipe at Harvard University's motto, "Veritas," which is Latin for truth. "They haven't seen truth at Harvard in 100 years," he said.
Santorum, a former two-term U.S. senator from Pennsylvania who lost re-election in 2006, has often criticized what he views as elitist. Some of his greatest levels of support have come from voters without a college education, said Chris Borick, director of the Institute of Public Opinion at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pa.
Santorum's more recent comments on education appear part of an effort to energize blue-collar Republicans, and the topic provides a backdrop for him to define his conservatism, Borick said.
Elite colleges have long faced accusations they are out of touch politically with ordinary Americans. And in recent years, polls show eroding confidence in the integrity of colleges and that they have students' interests ahead of their own bottom lines.
However, in the last decade the proportion of Americans saying higher education is essential for success has roughly doubled from about 30 percent to roughly 60 percent, said Patrick Callan, president of the California-based Higher Education Policy Institute.
"There's a strong American sense ... that everybody ought to have a chance, and if they don't it's not a fair system," Callan said. While resentment and frustration over affordability are building, "I've never seen anybody elected to governor or state legislature by saying, 'We're letting too many people go to college,'" he said.
According to a Pew poll from last March, 94 percent of parents with at least one child under the age of 18 think their child will go to college.
In a 2010 Phi Delta Kappa poll conducted by Gallup, 75 percent of Americans called a college education "very important" and 21 percent called it "fairly important," with just 4 percent calling it not important.
"Nobody in any of (our) focus groups ever said, 'I'm so suspicious of those colleges, my kids not going. I'm going to home-school my kids for college,'" Callan said.
In January, the national unemployment rate stood at 4.2 percent for workers with at least a bachelor's degree, compared to 7.2 percent for workers with some college. The rate was 8.4 percent for people with just a high school degree, and 13.1 percent for those without a high school diploma.
Kathleen Hall Jamieson, an authority on political communications at the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg Center, said Santorum's comments are simply a "strategic misstep."
"You don't ever attack the aspirations of the American people, and the American people aspire to have children and grandchildren get a college or university degree, and they do it on simple economic grounds," she said.
Even conservative leader Ronald Reagan, who campaigned for governor in the 1960s against student protests at the University of California, Berkeley, was supportive of higher education once elected, said John Thelin, professor of higher education at the University of Kentucky and author of a history of American colleges.
While it's true on balance that college faculty probably lean left, generally colleges are fairly conservative institutions turning out students who "aim to be employable, to fit into existing organizations," Thelin said.
"I think a candidate possibly in desperation will look for something to latch onto. Once in a while it may be convenient to cite a campus or colleges in general as a fall guy for something," he said. "It's never the full basis of a campaign."

Welcome to the last of a three part series of tutorials where I show you how to design an iPhone App for small business clients from scratch. In this final lesson, I will teach you how to create and theme a custom detail view describing a company?s services.
In this section, I will show you how to design the last page of the app which is going to be the detail page that shows more information about the company?s services.
The end result will look similar to the screen below:
This screen has the look and feel of a website article, with a title, image, author info in addition to the article itself. The inspiration for this design is from the BizApp iPhone app design template. The article will be implemented with a UIWebView. This allows us to show rich content with links as well as typography.
Add a new View Controller to the Xcode project. Call it DetailViewController. Open the DetailViewController.h file and add the following fields to the header. These are the UI elements in the view.

At this point, we have our basic UI elements in place, so we need to hook up the new View Controller into the story board so we can navigate to it somehow.
Add a new View Controller to the MainStoryboard_iPhone file. Select the View Controller and change the class to the DetailViewController. This will make sure that any code we implement in the DetailViewController file will be connected with this new View on the Storyboard.
To make sure the new View Controller is shown when we tap on a service in the Grid, we can connect it by using a segue. This is a new feature in the iOS 5 SDK. To do that, select the Storyboard file and CTRL+Drag from the GridViewController to the DetailViewController. An action pop-up is shown with some options. select ?push?. This means the new ViewController will be pushed onto the screen in a normal UITableView way.
After doing that, a link (segue) is created between the two ViewControllers. Click on the segue and name it ?detail?.
To add the last part of the connection, open the GridViewController.m file and add the following piece of code:

The next step is to pass some data from our model (which we created in Part 2) to the Detail View Controller. To do this, the first step is to extend the Model with the data we need.

WASHINGTON ? Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum released four years of federal income tax returns on Wednesday night, showing a sharp rise in his personal wealth spurred by his growing work as Washington-based corporate consultant and media commentator.
Santorum, 53, has sold himself in the Republican primaries as both a social conservative and a Washington outsider, stressing his family's coal-mining background and his appeal to religious and working-class voters. His personal finances tell a different story, detailing the trajectory of a politician who grew more prosperous in the Senate and became a millionaire afterward, at times capitalizing on his Beltway connections.
The former Pennsylvania senator's tax returns show that his annual income surged from nearly $660,000 in 2007 to $1.1 million in 2009 before slipping to $923,000 in 2010.
Santorum's wealth doesn't come close to the multimillion-dollar fortune amassed by Mitt Romney's high-finance prowess or Newt Gingrich's smaller but still-lucrative blend of foundation and consulting work. But his newfound affluence reflects his close ties to Washington's business and lobbying circles during his 12 years in the Senate and his smooth transition into their world after he left office.
His federal income taxes rose from 2007, when he paid $167,000, to $310,000 in 2009, then dropped to $263,000 in 2010. Santorum paid a combined tax rate of 28 percent over the four years, putting him in a high tax bracket but not in the top 35 percent. Gingrich paid an estimated 31 percent, according to his federal returns, while Romney paid 14 percent because many of his earnings came from investments taxed at a lower capital gains rate. Both Romney and Gingrich recently disclosed income tax returns.
Santorum's 2010 tax returns show he made more than $550,000 in media and consulting fees ? paid to him through a corporation he set up, Excelsior LLC. The previous year, Santorum made more than $820,000 in fees, also paid through the same firm.
Last year, Santorum disclosed investment and real estate assets totaling as much as $2.5 million. In his presidential financial disclosure spanning 18 months between 2010 and 2011, Santorum also listed $1.3 million in income as a consultant ? much of it coming from media appearances and corporate work on behalf of health care, energy and social conservative interests.
Rising to GOP leadership in the Senate as Republican Conference chairman, Santorum pushed to expand the influence of Republican-leaning business interests. As conference chairman, he headed GOP Senate communications efforts and met regularly with GOP-leaning business and lobbying figures. He raised more than $550,000 from lobbyists during his unsuccessful 2006 Senate re-election campaign.
After his Senate defeat, Santorum did not register as a lobbyist, but he aided corporate and other interests as a consultant. He was paid $142,500 by Consol Energy, a Pennsylvania-based energy firm with numerous Appalachian coal mines. The firm has lobbied against Obama administration efforts to tighten limits on greenhouse gas emissions.
Santorum also was paid $65,000 by the American Continental Group, a D.C. lobbying firm with an assortment of corporate clients, and $125,000 by the Clapham Group, a Virginia firm that aids religious rights organizations. He benefited from media work, earning $230,000 for appearances on Fox News and more than $80,000 for stints as a radio commentator.
Santorum was also paid nearly $400,000 in compensation and stock options as a board director at Universal Health Services, a hospital management firm, after he left the Senate in 2006. He also owns up to $250,000 in Universal stock. As a senator, Santorum had sponsored several unsuccessful bills that would have secured more Medicaid funding for hospitals run by Universal and other medical firms in Puerto Rico.
Santorum also owns five rental properties in State College, Pa., worth $500,000 and $1.25 million, but also with as much as $750,000 in mortgage debt, according to his presidential disclosure. His taxes show that he took mortgage and depreciation deductions on those properties, and also that he sold more than $23,000 worth of stocks in 2010.
Santorum and his wife, Karen, took standard deductions each year for their seven children, the returns show. In 2007, the Santorums took a $4,000 charity deduction for giving away "clothing, footwear, accessories and household items." That year, the family moved into a larger home in the Virginia suburbs of Washington.
Santorum and his family now live in a four-bedroom northern Virginia house on five acres assessed at $1.4 million in 2010.

BOSTON ? Education is seen as crucial to boosting Africa's economic and social development. And preschool programs in rural Africa stimulate children to do better in school. Early education has a positive ripple effect on their families, too.
That is the finding of a new World Bank report?which evaluates a preschool program in Mozambique run by?Save the Children?that was funded by a donation from American Idol's charity campaign.?
?The study, rare in Africa, has thrown light on the possibilities that we in developing countries can explore to give our children a much better future," said Mozambique's Minister of Education H.E. Zeferino Martins.
The pioneering study of early child development programs in Africa was funded by the World Bank and the International Initiative for Impact Evaluation.
Save the Children's preschool program was also among the first of its kind in Mozambique, where only four percent of children under the age of 5 go to preschool, according to Mozambican government officials.?

Here are some notable findings from the study?by?World Bank researchers Sophie Naudeau and Sebastian Martinez:
- Children in the preschool were 24 percent more likely to enroll in primary school and were significantly better equipped to learn than kids not enrolled in preschool.
- Children attending the preschool were much more likely to show interest in math and writing, recognize shapes and show respect for other children than those who are not.
- Preschool has a positive ripple effect on a child?s wider family; parents of enrolled kids were 26 percent likelier to work, while some older siblings were able to go to school themselves.
?This evaluation provides us evidence of the convincing results in preschool program thus revealing the great potential for improving the health and learning outcomes of children in Africa," said World Bank Vice President for Africa and former Nigerian Minister of Education Obiageli Ezekwesili.

The study covered 2,000 households in 76 rural communities of Mozambique's Gaza province, which is close to the capital Maputo and has relatively higher human development indicators than the rest of the country, according to Save the Children. Mozambique's low development means there is an urgent need for preschool programs in other parts of the country, according to the organization.?
Save the Children?s program helped build preschool centers to assist orphans and vulnerable children. With the help of trained volunteers from rural communities, the preschool centers reached about 5,000 kids ranging in age from three to six years.
A large part of Save the Children's preschool program was funded by American Idol fans.
The 2007 American Idol Gives Back charity event donated $13.5 million to Save the Children, and the organization used $1 million of those funds to start preschool programs in 30 communities in the Gaza province in 2008. The donation was also used to build classrooms, latrines and playgrounds, provide school supplies and training for teachers and volunteers.
?We are delighted that our early learning program in Mozambique offers a model for low-income countries across Africa,? said Carolyn Miles, Save the Children president.

LOS ANGELES, Feb 15 (Reuters.com) ? In her new romantic comedy "This Means War" Reese Witherspoon portrays a woman who returns to dating after a failed relationship only to find herself torn between two men, who happen to be friends and CIA operatives.
The film, which opens in theaters on Friday, tucks some dating drama in between a lot of action as the two men, played by Chris Pine and Tom Hardy, find their friendship put to the test when competing for the attention of Witherspoon's character, Lauren.
Witherspoon's real life is more stable and less dramatic than Lauren's. The 35-year-old actress is nearing her one-year wedding anniversary to Jim Toth. She spoke with Reuters about the film, her hunky co-stars, her commitment to representing her southern heritage and helping female filmmakers.
Q: You won an Oscar for drama "Walk the Line," and the "Legally Blonde" comedies were big hits. This movie is all out action. Would you say it is a departure for you?
A: "It was a great opportunity to try something new, yet I felt like it had enough comedy that it felt fresh. Combining it with this very viable spy story made it feel new. But I had a few stunt doubles because there were things like driving cars, jumping off buildings, cars tumbling towards me, things on fire...(laughs)."
Q: So you didn't get to partake in all the action?
A: "I did do the trapeze work on this movie because I had been in circus training for 'Water For Elephants' and the shooting was very close between the two movies."
Q: Tell me about your two co-stars. What is Tom Hardy like?
A: "He's a very intense, focused actor. His mind races with thoughts and ideas. He was writing his own lines and helping us construct narrative. He's smart - always adding to the process."
Q: And Chris Pine?
A: "Chris is very thoughtful and earnest. What I didn't expect was this wonderful charismatic charm. He has a composure that's lovely to be around. He's really grateful for everything he has in his life."
Q: In a fictional world, how does one choose between them?
A: "Women on the set were going crazy about both. It actually was very interesting because it was 50/50. They couldn't decide. It was a constant, 'Who would you choose?' We were trying to decide if we should have done alternate endings."
Q: This is not the first film where you played a character in a love triangle. Your last two films before this - "Water For Elephants," "How Do You Know" - had those elements. Coincidence?
A: "It seems to be happenstance. I'm making movies that I would want to see. There is a part of it that's a female fantasy of having two men fight over you, but at no point do I think these guys are really interested in fighting over me. I know all of their girlfriends and wives and we're all very close - those women approved of me! That's how I managed to pull it off."
Q: Next you'll be working with filmmaker Atom Egoyan on "The Devil's Knot," based on the true story about the West Memphis Three, who were convicted of murdering three 8-year-old boys. What made you take on such a serious project?
A: "It happened in an area very close to where I grew up so I understand the cultural idea of who these people are. I want to always represent that area with dignity. It's part of the privilege that I have being southern. One of the things that really touched me is that there are three little boys who are gone and they're not coming home and we don't know who did it. I would want people to have as much awareness of the case and keep looking. I have an 8-year-old son at home and the emotional connection I have to the story is profound. It's a horror you cannot imagine as a parent."
Q: You have an Oscar and are a viable commodity at the box office. What else do you want to accomplish in your career?
A: "I'm starting a new company with (producer) Bruna Papandrea, and we will be producing some films with a very clear female voice. I've been acting since I was 14, and I know every aspect of filmmaking at this point. I think it's important for women who have attained a certain amount of success in this business to give back to other female writers and filmmakers and try and help facilitate their dreams."
Q: Your daughter is 12 - two years shy of when you first began working as an actress. Does she hold any of that same interest in acting that you did at that age?
A: "No. She's a different person with her own personality. I didn't expect when I had a child to have a clone (laughs). She's an individual and that's all you can hope for in life - that you encourage their individuality."

TUESDAY, Feb. 14 (HealthDay News) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday that it was cautiously optimistic that a feared shortage of a life-saving drug used to treat a form of childhood leukemia will be averted.
The drug, methotrexate, is used in combination with other drugs to combat acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), which typically strikes children ages 2 to 5 and is the most common type of cancer in children.
Methotrexate is a linchpin in the treatment of children battling acute lymphoblastic leukemia. In high doses, the generic drug has been successful in curing patients and beneficial in preventing recurrence. Without the drug, a patient's chance for a cure is reduced while the risk of recurrence rises, oncologists report.
"We are seeing the [three] companies [that make methotrexate] respond to this shortage and they are planning on some very large releases, and we are planning on having the situation resolved," said Valerie Jensen, associate director of the FDA's drug shortage program.
"Right now, from what we are understanding from the companies, the releases will resolve these shortages. So we are watching this very closely," Jensen added. "We are expecting some good releases at the end of this month and continuing into March and beyond."
Oncologists are worried that supplies of methotrexate could be gone in as little as two weeks.
One of the three makers of methotrexate, Hospira Inc., based in Lake Forest, Ill., said Tuesday that it had increased production to "make up for the supply gap."
Thomas Moore, president of U.S. Hospira, said in a news release: "Hospira is doing everything it can to help bring more product to market. This includes working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to qualify a second supplier of the drug's active ingredient to enable increased production. Hospira believes that it can increase its supply to the market if it can secure additional methotrexate active ingredient supply."
The other two manufacturers are Mylan Inc., of Canonsburg, Penn., and Sandoz US Inc., of Princeton, N.J. Both said they are working to head off a shortage of the drug.
Mylan, in a Tuesday news release, said it has "ramped up its production in order to try to meet the resulting increased demand. We are working both on the manufacturing and regulatory fronts to expedite the FDA regulatory approvals necessary to further increase capacity to the extent possible to support the additional demand."
Dr. Elizabeth Raetz, an associate professor of pediatric hematology/oncology at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City, said methotrexate is a "critical component of ALL therapy."
The concern is that there is a 90 percent chance for cure of acute lymphoblastic leukemia, but that's based on the total drug regimen including methotrexate, Raetz said. "There is a deep concern that if that key component is eliminated there would be a reduced chance for cure," she said.
There hasn't been a shortage of the drug at her hospital, Raetz noted, but many other hospitals across the country have reached a critical point, and some centers don't have any at all, she said.
Acute lymphoblastic leukemia is the most common type of cancer in children. It's a disease that affects white blood cells, which help to fight infections in the body. Blood cells are produced in bone marrow. But in leukemia patients, the bone marrow produces abnormal white blood cells, which crowd out healthy blood cells. In acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the excess white blood cells are called lymphocytes or lymphoblasts, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine.
The potential shortage of methotrexate is just the latest in a series of drug shortages that have existed for several years.
In 2011, prescription drug shortages in the United States hit an all-time high. Last fall, some 200 drug shortages had been reported, compared to 178 in all of 2010, the FDA reported.
Many of the scarce drugs are injectables, such as cytarabine and cisplatin, used to treat serious conditions such as cancer. Some are only given in hospitals and are "absolutely critical," Jensen said during a news conference in late September.
More than half (54 percent) of shortages in 2010 were due to quality issues, such as sterility or drug impurities. Some were caused by delays or manufacturing capacity problems, while 11 percent were caused by discontinuation of a drug and 5 percent resulted from raw material shortages, Jensen said.
Jensen also said the shortages tend to occur in drugs that aren't "economically attractive." This could mean that only one company produces the drug, making it harder to find alternatives if the supply dries up.
A lot of the problems are tied to generic drugs, health experts explained, because few manufacturers make them and profit margins aren't as high as for drugs still under patent protection.
On Oct. 31, 2011, President Barack Obama signed an executive order designed to help ease the drug shortages. The order directed the FDA to "take action" to prevent and reduce the worsening prescription drug shortages.
Specifically, the order directed the FDA to take steps to require drug manufacturers to report any impending shortages or discontinuances six months ahead of the shortage. The agency should also speed up its review of new manufacturing sites, new suppliers and new manufacturing protocols, and also add more staff to its drug-shortage office, the order stated.
